What is the working mechanism of the water purifying system?

The water purification system has become a very important system for the household. It has become a means of preventing water-borne diseases and ensuring that the household has clean and safe water for drinking. There are different water purification processes which undergo the mechanism of filtration. They include Reverse Osmosis (RO), Ultra Filtration (UF), and Ultra Violet Disinfection (UV). The method of purification is dependent on the type of water.

Reverse Osmosis

This is one of the most effective water purifying systems. It involves the flow of water through a semi-permeable membrane. The dissolved solutes and contaminants such as microorganisms, ions and other chemicals are blocked by the membrane from further contamination. Different components are involved in the Reverse Osmosis system. These components and their functions include:

Pre-filters

Water passes through the Reverse Osmosis Pre-filters after flowing through cold water line valves. These filters get rid of sediments such as chlorine content, dirt and other substances which are present in the water. This process protects the membrane from damage. Carbon filters and sediments are examples of pre-filters used in water purifying system.

Reverse Osmosis Membrane:

The purpose of this membrane is to remove all contaminants present in the water. The water flows into the storage tank after this stage of purification

Storage Tank:

This tank stores purified water. The capacity of storage tanks differ hence, it is important to note the usage of the tank before taking a final decision

Post Filters:

Before water flows out of the Reverse Osmosis faucet from the storage tank, it enters the final phase of filtration which is the post filter. It is usually a carbon filter which removes bad odor from the water and gives the water a better taste.

Drain Line

This is used to drain out waste water which contains dirt, contaminants and unwanted components

Ultra Violet Disinfection

This water purifying system involves the use of a UV lamp to provide a pure and safe water for drinking. The UV light involved in this process has a high power. It is also known as germicidal UV or UV-C. It functions by penetrating the body of pathogens to modify their DNA in a way that hinders multiplication. It can also deactivate them. These rays have shown the ability to get rid of 99.9% of microorganisms.

The advantage of UV lamp over the use of chemicals for disinfection is that microorganisms cannot develop tolerance to UV light. At the pretreatment phase, water runs through the carbon and sediment filters. The carbon filters remove the organic impurities while the sediment filters remove the silt present in water.

Ultra-Filtration

This purify system involves the use of hydrostatic pressure to force water against a semi-permeable membrane which has the ability to get rid of different microorganisms and bad odor present in the water.

There is no much difference between ultra-filtration and Nano Filtration, reverse osmosis and microfiltration. However, the size of the molecules they retain differ. Ultrafiltration removes microorganisms, colloids and other molecules which are bigger than the size of the pores in a semi-permeable membrane.

Conclusion:

There are different water purifiers from different brands which use multiple purification systems to remove different types and sizes of contaminants to make water suitable and safe for drinking. It is advisable to ensure that you use a water purifier from a renowned brand such as KENT that ensures you have safe water devoid of impurities and provides exclusive and exceptional after sales service.
